In the wine business, the quality of the marketing is often as important as the quality of the grapes, and sometimes even more so.
Consider the recent efforts of Franck Rynart, who has successfully brought the Top of the South African wineries into Eastern Europe, Turkey and Russia. The passion for wine started as a hobby and today it is part of his life.
South Africa is a country with a long and rich history of making wine, dating back to the end of the 17th century. South Africa is the World’s 7th largest wine producer – about 3% of world’s production, and mainly grows white grapes, including Chenin blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc, while red varieties include Pinotage, a hybrid developed in the country.
Already for 20 years Franck Rynart has been travelling throughout Eastern Europe and noticed that South African wines are not at all well represented in this part of Europe. Reason to change was necessary.
In the beginning many people were hesitating when Franck presented South African wines, but after they have tasted the quality, everybody got very excited. Last year the first selected wines were brought into Turkey, now today full containers are brought into the country and find their way to the many top restaurants in Istanbul.
Besides Turkey South African wines find their way to Hungary, Romania, Greece, Russia and Kazakhstan. It has been a growing business where the Top of South Africa finally meets the East of Europe.
